Where accidents happen
California has the most cases in the NTSB's record from 2016 to 2026 (1,186); it has the 2nd largest fleet of registered aircraft. Measured against the aircraft registered in each state, Hawaii has the highest rate (141.2 per thousand): a small resident fleet with much visiting, tour or bush flying pushes a state's rate up.
Every state as a box
Each box is a state, sized by its cases in the ten years; the darker the box, the larger the share of its cases that were fatal. Hover for the numbers, click for the state's cases.
By state
Cases in the state against the manned aircraft registered there. Visitors crash too, so a state with much transient flying (Alaska, the mountain West, Florida in winter) rates higher than its own fleet explains.
