Fatal accidents averaged 587 a year from 1982 to 1986 and 300 a year from 2021 to 2025; the worst year in the record was 1983, with 645. Some of that fall is less flying: general aviation flies fewer hours than it did in the 1980s, by roughly a quarter to a third on the FAA's surveys, so the rate per hour flown has come down less than the count. The 2026 bar covers 10 months, not a full year.
