Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)
Jet fuel made from fats and oils, wastes, residues, alcohols or captured carbon and hydrogen rather than crude oil, and blended into ordinary Jet A within the limit its production pathway allows. Each pathway is an annex of ASTM D7566; once blended, the fuel is Jet A and no change to the aircraft or engine is needed. Production is about 2 million tonnes a year worldwide against 320 million tonnes of jet fuel burned.
