These special Conditions are issued for the Canadair CL-600-2B19, Regional Jet airplane. This airplane will have novel or unusual design features associated with a number of high technology avionic systems including cathode ray tube engine and flight information displays, digital engine control and electronically controlled braking. The applicable regulations do not contain adequate or appropriate safety standards for the protection of these systems from the effects of lightning and high-intensity radiated fields (HIRF). These special conditions contain the additional safety standards which the Administrator considers necessary to ensure that the critical and essential functions that these systems perform are maintained when the airplane is exposed to lightning and HIRF.
