SA3036WE-D
Modifies aircraft to install dual Delco C-IV Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) for attitude and direction reference, navigation, and auto-pilot steering. Also adds a Sperry DG-207 Directional Gyro in the Aux position and Azimuth switching capability. The VG-DG racks are replaced by the INS Navigation units in the above configuration, but the modification permits replacing the INS Navigation units with VG-DG racks to provide triple VG-DG for attitude and direction reference only. The installation is in accordance with DAS-1-WE Approved United Air Lines Drawing List No. COA 3-2023, dated March 22, 1977, or later FAA approved revisions. United Air Lines FAA Approved Flight Manual Supplement to McDonnell Douglas Flight Manual Document Number MDC-J1010 dated February 17, 1977, or later FAA approved revision is required as part of this installation. Held by United Airlines INC, which holds 520 approved modifications in all. Last revised November 30, 2011. System: instruments and avionics.

What an approved modification is
A supplemental type certificate is the FAA's approval of a change to a certified design: a new engine or propeller, avionics, an autopilot, floats, a parachute, a larger fuel tank, an ice-protection kit. The company holding it may sell the kit and the paperwork to owners of the listed models; the modification then becomes part of that aircraft's record. The FAA's list says what was approved and for which models, not how many aircraft carry it.
