The NTSB's narrative final · quoted from the NTSB record

THE PILOT ATTEMPTED A TAKEOFF ON RUNWAY 18 WITH WINDS FROM 220 DEGREES AT 10 TO 15 KNOTS. THE GRASS RUNWAY WAS 2700 FEET LONG AND 90 FEET WIDE. PEOPLE WERE AHEAD AND ON THE LEFT AND THE PILOT SAID HE LET THE PLANE DRIFT TO THE RIGHT TO GIVE THEM MORE CLEARANCE. HE SAID HE THEN HIT A BUMP AND BECAME AIRBORNE AND THE WHEELS WERE DRAGGING IN BRUSH. THE PILOT DECIDED TO ABORT THE TAKEOFF AND CLOSED THE THROTTLE. THE AIRCRAFT THEN STRUCK A TREE. THE FAA REPORTED THEY COULD FIND NO EVIDENCE OF A PRE EXISTING FAILURE OR MALFUNCTION WITH THE FLIGHT CONTROLS OR BRAKES AND THE AIRPLANE DEPARTED THE RUNWAY, WITH OVER 1000 FEET OF USABLE RUNWAY LEFT, WENT DOWN AN EMBANKMENT AND STRUCK A TREE.

About this page

Everything above comes from the NTSB's public accident database: the narrative, probable cause and findings are the NTSB's own words, and the coded tables behind its report (pilot, aircraft, flight, weather, injuries, sequence of events) are written out in plain English. Pilots' ages, home towns and medical details are left out on purpose. The docket at the NTSB holds the report as a PDF and the investigation's photographs and documents. This site never names pilots, passengers or anyone else involved. A preliminary report describes what is known soon after the event and can change; the final report, with the probable cause, usually follows one to two years later and this page is refreshed when it does. Case number NYC90LA194.
